Purpose of the first covenant

Hebrews Scroll 02Realizing that Jesus is now my eternal high priest, and He came to usher in a new covenant, what is really the purpose of the first covenant other than now being a shadow of the new?

I am asking the question in regards to how it relates to my walk with God, starting this morning.

The first covenant comes with regulation for worship and it comes with an earthly temple.  Those regulations for worship really identified the holiness and awe of God – His might, power, and glory.  I would think a few of our chorus today could do better for the instructions for worship came from God Himself.  As much as He likes relationship, He likes it in context to who He is.  I mean the inner sanctuary was called the Holy Place and inside that was the Holy of Holies and when the high priest went in they tied a rope around his ankle – just in case he was overcome with the presence of God and had to be pull out.

Here we see how irrelevant the first covenant is to the new one and now serves more as a symbol for our present age for blood was offered here once a year and now that this is no longer needed, the Holy Spirit has a free reign to move in our hearts and bring God right into our very lives and hence the conviction of sin is present because the Holy Spirit it present.

So I come to my God in devotion with extreme care – asking for the forgiveness of sin, asking Him to come and be part of my life, asking Him to see me as the temple of the Holy Spirit and to walk with me throughout the day – be “God with us” to me.
