Isaiah prophesied almost four hundred years before Christ‘s birth that when He would enter into a certain area the people, who sat in darkness would see a great light and for the first time those who were smothered by the shadow of death – light has dawned in their world.
Matthew was the one that reminded us of it when he described Christ coming into the area of the land of Zeb′ulun and the land of Naph′tali. It must have been an incredible scene to him – watching prophecy being fulfilled right in front of him.
I am challenged today because Jesus lives in me and as I go into areas of darkness, I know that my task is to make God’s love visible to others. Keeping my mind on this track is difficult – I want to do what everyone else is doing – but I cannot.
The reason we cannot is not what you might think. We have a message to give to everyone we meet. We are not just a pretty light showing off our spiritual glow. The message is the same that Jesus brought with Him and in fact, I believe the message is the real light for its truth set people free. His message was, “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
I know – we think by supplying fresh water, providing medical attention, feeding the poor, setting up homes that we are the light to the world. All of that is a waste unless we declare the truth and set people free by proclaiming repentance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. When we do that, people will see God with us.
